  • Over the years, however, corruption among government officials weakened Qing rule. Money spent on supporting the economic system went into bribes or into personal fortunes of government officials. The needs of the poor were ignored, the military declined, and floods damaged crops when canals were not repaired. As the wealth of the Qing increased, it was at the cost of losing important political support among the people.

  • As a result of the Qing's prosperity, traders from places like Germany, Great Britain, the United States, and Portugal came to China. These barbarians, as the Chinese called them, wanted silks, paintings, and porcelain from China. Unfortunately, these nations had few items the Chinese wanted in return for their goods. The traders were determined to engage in trade with China, however, since it meant huge profits for them.
  • Although the Qing were never fully defeated, it was not long before they were controlling the political and economic systems of the Qing dynasty. The Europeans and Americans used their stronger weapons, including ships, cannons, and cuns to overpower the Qing. The Qing had to give in to the trading rights and privileges the Europeans and Americans wanted. The new trading relationship was unequal and unprofitable for the Chinese.
