  • My name is Emily. I could help you with your report, but I have a better idea. You should talk to my plant about it. However I shall have to turn you into a dog for you to understand. Then I will turn you back, promise. Lexi will help. Right Lexi?
  •
  • Yeah mom!
  • oh, ok?...
  • Hi, I'm John. D'ya think you could tell me a bit about photosynthesis? I need to write a report about it for my plant news column but I have no idea what it is
  • Well, if she said that, she was right, and I will need no payment. First, you must learn the basics. Lets, think of it like this...
  • Hi, Emily said that you could help me with my photosynthesis report
  • John, meet spider plant. I will leave you two to get along. Call me if you need anything
  • Oh look at the time! It's LUNCHTIME! Good thing too, I am starving. Thank god the sun is out and there is still rain from that storm earlier. OMG, and these animals and humans are breathing carbon dioxide. Just the things I need to make food. I absorb sun rays and carbon dioxide through pores in my leaves called stomata. I also suck up the water through my roots like a straw, and it travels up things called vascular bundles which are made up of two tubes called xylem and phloem. As you have probably noticed, I am talking about PHOTOSYNTHESIS!!! Let's think of this as a recipe. I take these ingredients (sun, water & carbon dioxide) and blend them together to create glucose and oxygen!!
  • Now, based on what I just told you, when do you think this process occurs?
  • Correct! It is because the sun rays are one of the ingredients in photosynthesis. Without it, the amazing plants would NOT be able to make food. JOHN, STOP PRANCING AROUND THE ROOM, DO YOU SEE ME PRANCING? QUIT IT!!!!!!. Now Lexi will explain why she thinks photosynthesis is important to regular boring humans. Right Lexi?
  • I think that this process happens only in the daytime.
  • Totally! Wait, HOW DARE YOU CALL ME REGULAR AND BORING! Ugh, same old spider plant.
  • I think the most important part about photosynthesis is that this process is the no. 1 source of oxygen in the atmosphere. Oxygen is the byproduct of photosynthesis which is used by all living organisms for respiration and survival. When we consume cellulose (fiber) and starch through fruits and vegetables, it gets converted back into glucose in our stomachs. Now isn't that cool! Plus, the oxygen that we breathe in then helps break the glucose into ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which is fuel for our entire body.
  • Well you're back earlier than I expected. Did you learn anything about photosynthesis from spider plant and Lexi? I hope they weren't fighting.
  • Sure, wait, oh dear, I am ever so sorry, but I think I forgot the spell to turn you back into a human. I guess you will have to stay a dog for the rest of eternity! Oh well, bye!
  • Yes, in fact I learned quite a lot! Now I am ready to write my report. Speaking of which, could you turn me back into a human now?"
