Hi, I'm Colette Martin, or Coco! I live in Kalamazoo, Michigan and I have 1 brother. I'm currently 10 years old and I'm loving it!
While packing to go to grandma's house...
I know, me too sis!
Jason, I'm so excited to see all our cousins at grandma's family reunion!
ARE WE THERE YET?ARE WE THERE YET?ARE WE THERE YET?ARE WE THERE YET?
Ughhh it's so crammed in here!!
Hello everyone! Hi Coco, hi Jason, hi Valerie, hello Del! It's so good to see you all, I've missed you dearly.
Hi grandma!!
Hi mom!
Hi grandma!!
Hello Edith
I always had the best time with my cousins. Although I had 21 first ones, I managed to create a sentimental and valuable bond with each and every one of them.
HI EVERYONE!!!! I missed you guys so so much, let's go have some fun!
Playing with or seeing my cousins was always the highlight of my day. We all lived 5 minutes from each other so I could see them anytime. They all made me feel truly loved, they were my absolute best friends.
I like your shirt Edie!
I always felt like I didn't belong. No one looked like me, no one really talked to me, and everyone looked at me differently. I thought there was something wrong with me.
Hey you, get up . This is my seat, and you don't belong here anyways.
Huh? Oh, right, sorry. I'll get up now...
My mom was my superhero. She was always there for me, always picked me up when I fell down, she was my best friend and the best mom anyone could ask for.
Mommy, why doesn't anyone at school like me? And why doesn't anyone look like me? Do I not belong?
Oh sweetie, never think that, you do belong. Ignore those little mean girls at school, you're awesome Colette, never forget that.
CHAPTER 2:The Epiphany
10 YEARS LATER
Dance. There are no words to express how much I love dance. Dance is the thing that motivates me to get out of bed in the morning. I know how cliche that sounds but it's sincerely true. Dance is most definitely my biggest passion.
5, 6, 7, 8!
My brother was a superstar. He played the guitar, the piano, sang, danced, and had so many more talents. I could tell from the moment he played at his first show that he would be going places.
Great job out there bro! I'm so proud.
Yeah I bet. Okay now eat up, I have some big news to tell you back at mom's!
Thanks sis! I was really nervous in the beginning though...
Okay, I've been thinking and...I want to move to California!
Yes!! And I want you to come with me. Obviously you would finish school first but I want you to visit with me in three months. When you actually live there you can pursue your music dreams and me with my dance!
You know what, why not! It'll be our fun little adventure and maybe there I'll really have a shot at making it.
So what's this big news sis?
I'm sorry, what?!
Sooo, you excited for Cali?
Back at Loyola...
Don't worry Coco, you'll do just fine. You're awesome, never forget that.
I don't know Mimi. I just feel like I'm going to fail on my own. I'm scared and I'm not going to have anyone looking out for me anymore.
Chapter 3:Prep Time
At this point, life was hard. I was stressed out 24/7, I was working multiple jobs at once, and I had to save up money for my move to California. There was a lot on my plate.
Here ya go folks! Have a good rest of your day. Gotta run boss!
Here ya go folks! Have a good rest of your day. Gotta run boss!
Here ya go folks! Have a great night.
Finally home. Same thing tomorrow. Gotta get to California.
Soon after, I became a cheerleader for the Chicago Bulls...MICHAEL JORDAN! It was one of the best experiences of my life.
GO BULLS!
A few days later at mom's house...
Hey mom, I'm so sorry to ask but, can I please borrow some money?
Oh thank you so much mom. And of course, I will ask for help when I need it. Love you!
Of course honey, and remember, it is always okay to ask for help Colette.
Colette Martin.
I finally did it. California, here I come!
$950, $960, $970, $980, $990, $1000! Let's do this!
Chapter 4:The Journey
Alright ready bro?
Oh don't cry mom we'll be okay.
I mean I guess...
I know, I'll just miss you guys so much! Good luck.
And we're off. Off to a fresh new start to a place of many opportunities. I'm ready to tackle it all!
Oh man, nighttime. One of my biggest fears is driving at night when I'm tired. Last time I did, I fell asleep at the wheel and got hit by a big truck. but that cannot happen tonight. especially not with my brother. Just gotta get through the night.
ARCO Gas Station. Dallas, Texas 1991
Finally, we made it.... I made it. I knew this next chapter of my life was going to be one like never before, and it set the tone for the rest of my life.
Chapter 5:New Shoes
Edie, thank you again for letting us stay here.
Oh, you're the best Edie. I love you so so much.
Of course Coco, no problem at all.
Here ya go folks! Have a good rest of your day. Gotta run boss!
Here ya go folks! Have a good rest of your day.
I can't believe that I did all that hard work back home just to do more here. This is going to be a challenge.
About 8 years later, my brother had his first kid, Jaron Martin. Now they've got their own place, I've got my own place...we're all separated and disconnected.
You know, I never really realized how much different California is from Kalamazoo. It's much bigger, obviously, there's much more diversity and inclusion, and i think it's just all around a better community.
I love it here.
Chapter 6:The Last Dance
This is my family. My three nieces, nephew, brother, and sister-in-law. Even though I have no kids of my own, I feel like my family is complete.
7 YEARS LATER
Hey there, I like your bike! What's your name?

Congratulations, it's a girl!
And that was the day my beautiful baby girl was born, Kylee Casey Martin, August 24, 2007. Has a ring to it right? I am now stepping into my next phase of life with curiosity and excitement, motherhood.
Well, that's my story and I hope you all enjoyed! Thank you for....watching? Bye everyone!
