- Weeds grow and die, accumulating on the bottom of the pond, making it shallower.
- Step 5
- Willows and Other moisture-loving trees and shrubs take root along the edges of the pond. These also use up water, making the pond shallower.

- The pond becomes shallower with more dead plant material.
- Willows, aspen, and other less water-loving plants take roots.
- pond dries up and aspen crowd out willows, creating a forest.
