- Mikhail Gorbachev becomes Leader of the Soviet Union On March 11, 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev became the last leader of the Soviet Union before its collapse in 1991. Gorbachev had "brought many reforms to the Soviet Union including new freedoms which eventually led to many countries breaking away from the union claiming independence" (Ducksters, 2007)
- (2) Captain Maximillian Zakharov. Former soldier and now high member of the KGB. Pleasure to meet you sir.
- (1) Mr. Gorbachev! Allow me to introduce myself, I am-
- (2) I thank you for your sentiments Captain. But I plan to change the state of things here, not keep them
- (1) Oh, well yes sir. I just wanted to say that since you are the new leader of the wonderful USSR I just wanted to say that whatever you need done or commanded to do, I will do. For I have been loyal to the state for decades.
- (2) As new leader of the state, Captain, I plan to free our subjects from the shackles of communism
- (1) How do you mean sir?
- (2) Precisely Captain. I know you have been all around Europe, but have you truly seen what this regime is doing to innocent people?
- (3) . . .
- (1) But sir, that would mean undoing all that we've worked for. All the people we have saved!

- (1) I heard you were once a good man, Zakharov. This new world we are going to be apart of needs more good men. I will let you know if I have a task for you. Goodbye Captain
