Storyboard Text

  • Scene 1: Distant at Birth
  • I'll have plenty of time to hold him.
  • When will this lady leave me alone?
  • Don't you want to hold your baby? It's important to make a connection with him.
  • Scene 2: Infant Isolation
  • Just ignore it.
  • Why doesn't it stop crying? I'm trying to watch the game!
  • Waaaaaaa
  • Scene 3: Child Development
  • He lacks verbal and emotional skills. I wonder how his parents are with him...
  • When Alex is first born, his mother shows little interest in making a connection with him, which is important for his social development. Without nurturance, children don't develop normally, and may be more anxious, fearful, and passive.
  • Scene 4: Behaviour Problems
  • Alex is often getting into fights with other children on the playground. He has a tendency to bite other kids.
  • In Alex's first few months of life, his parents neglect him and don't respond when he is crying. They leave him in his baby carriage, thinking that he will eventually stop crying and be fine. However, it is crucial that children are exposed to caring and loving humans during their first few months of life. Brains of children with limited social contact in their first few months of life may not fully develop.
  • Scene 5: Learning Challenges
  • Are you able to stay after class so we can work through the homework together?
  • When Alex was four, he was taken to a doctor after it was noticed that he lacked verbal and emotional skills. Socialization is the process by which people learn to function in social life and become aware of themselves as they interact with others. When children are neglected, neural structures that are responsible for emotional and intellectual development wither and die.
  • Scene 6: Struggle to Fit In
  • Did you bring cash?
  • Alex didn't go through "Mead's four stages of development" at the same rate as other children, as he didn't have good significant others to imitate at a young age. As a result of Alex's neglect and lack of social interaction, he didn't know how to behave properly with other children and got into trouble at school.
  • Alex also faces intellectual troubles in school. Although extra help and tutoring helped, it didn't allow him to catch up to most of the other students, and he was unable to completely recover from the effects of social isolation.
  • Alex continued to experience struggles fitting in socially as a young adult, and he even turned to crime. The neglect of his parents in Alex's early months and years of life had a lasting impact on his ability to develop strong and healthy social relationships, and therefore had a negative effect on the overall quality of his life.
