  • Trish was doing her homework after school one day at her desk outside across from the tree. Trish is 70ft away from the tree.
  • After a little while, Trish notices that her pet peacock is walking outside! The peacock is right under the tree far away from Trish. The angle of depression from Trish to her peacock is 59 degrees. Trish wants to know how far away she and her peacock are. She calculates cos(59)=70/H. 70/cos(59)=135.9 feet. Trish and her peacock are 135.9 feet away from each other.

  • Trish continued to do her homework and noticed that her cat also was outside with them! But her cat was up in the tree! Trish was looking at her cat. The angle of elevation from her to the cat is 68 degrees. Trish wants to know how far away her cat is from her. She calculates cos(68)=70/H. 70/cos(68)= 186.9 feet. Trish and her cat are so far away from each other!
  • With all of this math, Trish is curious on how tall the tree is! She knows that it is not best to use the hypotenuse because it might make the measurement inaccurate. She uses her angles of depression and elevation. tan(59)= X/70. tan(59)x70=116.5 feet. tan(68)=X/70. tan(68)x70=173.3 feet. She then needs to add them. 116.5+173.3=289.8 feet. The tree is 289.8 feet high.
  • Trish and her animals are all happy now!
