Storyboard Text

  • Hey Dad, I don't feel so well. I've had a fever since last night and have also been vomiting/diarrheaing . Can I go see the doctor?
  • Yeah sure Jacob, I'll book an appointment with Doctor Paul.
  • It looks like you have Salmonella. Salmonellosis, also known as Salmonella, is a bacteria that affects the intestines. This disease is very common, and you can get it by eating contaminated or raw food, or dirty water. In your case, the chicken and the vegetables you ate for lunch contained the bacteria and now it is living in your digestive system. That is why you have all of those symptoms.
  • Salmonella.....WHAT?!
  • Salmonella is named after Daniel Elmer Salmon because of his research on hogs where he discovered the bacteria which he named Salmonella in 1885.
  • The digestive system, specifically the Intestinal tract is affected by salmonella. If salmonella enters your bloodstream, it can infect tissues throughout your body.
  • The stomach is the main organ that is affected by salmonella. The stomach secretes enzymes and acid that digest food.
  • It also can affect almost all major organs, the tissue surrounding your brain and spinal cord, the lining of your heart or valves, bones or bone marrow, lungs, kidneys, liver, gallbladder, etc.
  • About 1.2 million people are affected by salmonella annually in the US, of which 450 people die from this disease. Approximately 93.8 million people are affected by salmonella globally each year, with around 155,000 deaths from this disease a year. Since Salmonella isn’t one of the most deadliest diseases, there aren’t really any organizations raising awareness.
  • Tell me more!
  • You, Jacob, can help by keeping away from poultry, beef, milk, and eggs. Most people only need fluids to recover in less than a week. Severe infections may require medical care including IV fluids and sometimes antibiotics.
  • Jacob, also avoid eating raw or barely cooked eggs. Don't eat raw or under-cooked beef, pork, or poultry. Refrigerate food properly, both before cooking it and after serving it. Wash your hands well with soap and warm water before, and after, handling food. Also, a study is being done of how to prevent the salmonella infection, so there's no need to worry.
  • Thanks for the help Mr. Paul! I'll be make sure to follow. Bye!
