In the 1860s, most of America's population was rural. Many families worked and lived on farms and grew crops for a living.

By 1870 there were only 2 American cities with the population of 500,000.
Throughout the 1880s and early 1990s, skyscrapers were being built.
In 1885, the first skyscraper was built in Chicago
Average family in the early 1900s (1910-1920)
More factories formed between 1865-1920 as well as businesses. This allowed many job opportunities to be available.
