  • I'm not feeling too good after swimming, Jack. I'm going to head home and see if I feel better later:(
  • I hope so, see you at school tommorrow.
  • You may just have a stomach bug, Joy. Sleep it off and you'll be fine tomorrow!
  • Sounds good, see you tomorrow and I hope feel better.
  • 2 DAYS LATER.....
  • Mom, I still feel terrible. I've missed school for 3 days. I've been constantly throwing up blood, I have no appetite, diarrhea and my stomach hurts so bad.
  • I'm sorry my sweet Joy, I'll make you a Doctor's Appointment and we'll get to the bottom of your sickness. Rest and we'll go in the morning.
  • The doctor asks the routine questions, then she asks if Joy has swam in any unchlorinated bodies of water
  • That's exactly what it is. Every year at least 200 cases of RWI's are reported. It is any unclean body of water that can carry germs. In your case, it was the lake. I want you to rest, stay hydrated and take these. You'll feel a lot better soon!
  • The doctor prescribed Joy antibiotics for the recreational water illness and within 3 days, she was back and up to her normal self. Be sure to stay clean and avoid swallowing recreational water. It can infect anyone, but it is treatable.
  • Actually yes... I swam at the lake with a friend the other day. I got water up my nose and in my mouth when you were playing. Could that be what's wrong with me?
  • RWI symptoms can start after swimming in contaminated water or it can take a few days. In this case, Joy's pain started immediately after.
