  • (Person on far right)As sad as this sounds, elephants will go extinct if they keep getting poached. The number of elephants alive have decreased by 62% in the past decade. Knowing this it is estimated that if we don’t do anything, elephants will be extinct by the end of the next decade
  • There are a lot of problems in the world and it is important to learn about them and educate others about them. One issue you will be learning about right now is poaching and how it is affecting elephants.
  • 30,000 elephants are dying out of 400,000 total elephants?!? That is 7.5% every year!
  • About 30,000 of 400,000 elephants are poached every year. This is a huge problem because this is continuing to happen every year even when poaching has been banned globally since 1990! Even with this rule in place, innocent elephants are dying every year just for the ivory in their tusks.
  • Yep! It is estimated that 100 African Elephants are poached every day. All these animals being poached heavily contributes to why the elephant species is classified endangered.
  • Well what will happen if these poaching continues?
  • Oh my gosh! That is so sad! But what can I do about it? I mean I am just a normal person.
  • That is okay! No matter who you are, anyone can make a difference.
  • Yeah! One thing you can do is to not buy ivory. This can be found in pianos, jewelry, and even dice! So if you are buying any objects like these make sure they don’t contain ivory.
  • That is an amazing first step to helping elephants! After doing this you can donate or buy non-profit merchandise towards helping elephants not get poached.
  • Thank you so much for teaching me about this global issue. I will stop buying products containing ivory and I will donate to organizations such as The Elephant Crisis Fund!
