  • In the 1740s, the British and French both became interested in the Ohio River Valley. The English colonists tried to encourage the Iroquois to attack the French, but the Iroquois declined and tried to stay neutral. Now both England and France laid claim to the Ohio River Valley.
  • The lieutenant governor of Virginia sent out 120 Virginia militia to protect an English fort that was being built in the Ohio River Valley. In command was 22-year-old Colonel George Washington. He found the French building their own post, Fort Duquesne. Determined to force out the French, he had a stockade called Fort Necessity built about 40 miles away.
  • Britain asked its colonies to prepare for war and to negotiate an alliance with the Iroquois. At the Albany Conference, the Iroquois refused an alliance with the British but did offer some support. The conference also issued the Albany Plan of Union, a proposal developed by a committee led by Benjamin Franklin. which proposed that the colonies form a union for their defense, to be headed by a royally appointed president and a legislature elected by the colonial assemblies.
  • This government, which was given the power to tax, would be in charge of Indigenous Peoples relations, could raise an army and navy, declare war, and arrange peace treaties. The delegates adopted the bold Albany Plan, and it was sent to the colonial assemblies for approval. Benjamin Franklin created the first published political cartoon, “Join or Die,” to try and convince the colonies to support the Albany Plan of Union.
  • In April 1757, British General Edward Braddock arrived in Virginia as commander of the British forces in North America. Braddock selected George Washington to be his aide in the colonies. due to an ambush, Braddock was killed but Washington was able to hold the British forces together during their retreat. the war eventually went global, The French and Indian War or the Seven Years’ War was the first world war.
  • The French and Indian War came to an official end with the Treaty of Paris, signed in February 1763. Great Britain had defeated France. The British Navy now ruled the seas, and the British Army commanded Europe and North America. Britain’s military strength now outranked that of both France and Spain.
