- As a young adult, Lincoln built and operated flatboats to contribute to his family. Soon he moved to new Salem , Illinois, and became a store clerk. In town, people marveled at his wittiness and knowledge.

- Growing up, his step mother encouraged his education, and guided him to learn to read and write.

- Lincoln had run for various political positions and served on the Illinois state legislature for 4 terms. Then, in 1858, he won the Republican party party nomination for an Illinois Senate seat.
- Lincoln challenged Democrat Stephen to seven debates about slavery. Lincoln was an adept orator, and believed that to unite the country . He had to prevent slavery expansion, but allow the existence of slavery.
- In the end, Douglas won the election, but Lincoln developed a national reputation and became a leader for the Republican Party
