  • Peace until...
  • The Debt
  • No taxation without representation!
  • Before 1760, the thirteen colonies had many self-run governments and no interference from Britain. All of a sudden, Britain started to become more strict with America and their rules.
  • The Boston Massacre
  • The Seven Years War was extraordinarily pricey, so the British assumed the best plan of action to take was to tax the thirteen colonies with the Stamp and Sugar Act.
  • The Boston Tea Party
  • Agitated by this, the colonists collectively decided that they needed to do something in order to show Britain their opinion. No taxation without representation! was the main subject matter spoken among the colonists.
  • The Intolerable Acts
  • On March 5th, 1770, after years of protesting and fighting over the Stamp and Sugar Act, the colonists had finally had enough. The British soldiers stationed in Boston got sick of the colonists harassing them, encouraging them to open fire on protesters, killing 5 and injuring many in the process. This event was named The Boston Massacre.
  • Following the Boston Massacre, the colonists were infuriated and needed to do something big. Something to show Britain who was really in control. On December 16, 1773, more than 100 colonists dressed as Native Americans and dumped 342 crates of tea into the Boston Harbor. This event became known as The Boston Tea Party.
  • After the Boston Tea Party, the British government introduced the intolerable acts, which allowed soldiers to stay in colonists homes, closed the Boston Harbor, and put the Massachusetts government under British control. War would follow soon after.
