- Captain Alexander Read introduced Ryotwari system on small scale in some area that were taken over by company after the war by Tipu Sultan.

- Ryots (agricultural cultivators) will give the revenue directly to the Company
- Thomas Munro, governor of Madras developed the Ryotwari system and gradually extended all over South India.
- Settlement were made directly with cultivators(Ryots) who tilled the land.
- Fields were surveyed before revenue assessment were made
- Revenue officials fixed too high revenue demand to increase the income from land
- Peasants were unable to pay taxes. Many ryots left the village and fled the countryside
