- ODYSSEY BOOK 21 ODYSSEUS STRINGS HIS BOW
- The Odyssey is Homer's epic of Odysseus' 10-year battle to go back home after the Trojan War. Odysseus fought mystical creatures, gods, and Spartans. At this point everyone believes Odysseus is dead. Penelope and their son Telemachus are facing a house full of suitors wanting Penelope's hand in marriage and the right to rule Ithaca.
- Penelope takes Odysseus' bow off the wall and remembers how he got the bow and arrows from Iphitus in Laceddaemon. Odysseus never took it with him on his trips because it was a special memory of his close friend.
- The theme of FAMILY is here because even though Penelope has cried for 20 years and mourned for Odysseus for 4 years she knows she must marry and provide a family for Telemachus. She wants to send the rest of the suitors away so she still has an inheritance left for her son.
- There will be a contest!
- CONTEST RULES 1. String Odysseus' bow 2. Shoot a straight arrow 3. The arrow must pass through all 12 axes 4. Penelope will marry the winner
- Yokels!! Fools!! Mawkish Idiots!!
- Antinous was making fun of Eumaeus for being sad about Odysseus and secretly wanted to win Penelope for himself.
- List of Men who Tried and Failed 1. Telemachus 2. Leodes 3. Melanthius 4. Eurymachus
- Odysseus checks to see if he can still trust Eumaeus and the cowherd. He reveals who he is and shows them his scar to prove his identity.
- Odysseus in disguise
- Again Homer uses the theme of family by explaining how each person is related and their historical importance. He wants the reader to know how important it is that people come from good families.
- Hey I'm Eupithes' son Antinous!! It's Feast Day! Let's try this bow and arrow contest later!
- PARTY!! It's Archer God Feast Day!! (or is it?)
- Odysseus
- Once everyone was drunk, Odysseus still disguised as an old man asked for a turn at the bow.
- Hey give me a turn, please.
- Penelope
- Give him a chance!
- No way old man!
- Antinous
- Telemachus sends his mom to her room.
- Odysseus shoots the arrow through the twelve ax heads and his son realizes he is not dead but he has returned to Ithaca finally!!
- ZEUS sent a bolt of lightning in approval of Odysseus' show of strength.
