- Good Afternoon Jorge! What brought you here? It is almost night maybe your mother is looking for you.
- Good afternoon Uncle Borge!
- I told my mother that I am coming here actually I came here to ask for your help. I am struggling with our project. I didn't quite understand the causes of plate tectonic movement.
- Conveyor Belt? is that the apparatus where the luggage of travelers is placed. It is used to transfer a heavy object.
- There are three main reasons why the tectonic plates are moving. All of these reasons boil down to various forces.The first possible reason is the mantle convection currents. Are you familiar with conveyor belts?
- If that so, come in, and I'll demonstrate to you the causes of plate movements so that you can understand better.
- Exactly! But in tectonic plates movement, a conveyor belt resembles a convection current where it is warm and can carry and drive the tectonic plates that make up the lithosphere. Convection in the mantle also behaves the same way convection happens in a pot soup on a hot stove.
- The second reason is the ridge push. The ridge push occurs at the resilient upwelling mantle at ridges placed on the mid-ocean level as a result of the rigid lithosphere sliding down the hot, raised asthenosphere below mid-ocean ridges.
- Based on my understanding, Uncle, This force occurs when the older plates start to sink. The plates get colder as they age, making them denser than the mantle underneath them. They begin to sink, dragging the warmer sections of the plate with them.
- That's cool, Uncle. Is the third force that causes the tectonic plate the slab pull?
- Yes, you are right. Can you explain how that force causes plate movement?
- Now that we discussed the causes of plate tectonic movements. I want you to know that, out of all these three forces, the slab pull is the most relevant one. It is the biggest driving force behind all of the tectonic plate movement. However, the main force that is behind all of the previously mentioned forces is gravity itself. Gravity is the reason why all of these other forces are capable of moving the tectonic plates.
