- Liesel's brother dies and this is also one of the last times she sees her mother. Liesel also steals her first book at her brother's funeral - 'The Gravedigger's Handbook'.
- Liesel meets her new foster family, the Hubermanns, as well as Rudy Steiner, her neighbour - the typical, desired German boy who was obsessed with American runner 'Jesse Owens'.
- Liesel steals her second book from a Nazi book-burning bonfire to celebrate Hitler's birthday.
- Max Vandenburg is introduced to the story. He is a Jew that begins to hide in the Hubermann's basement.
- The bombing of Himmel Street which caused the deaths of almost everyone who lived there.
- Max and Liesel are finally reunited.
