- Do you know what the Freedom Constitution is, Sir?
- When Corazon Aquino took office, she repealed the 1973constitution and replaced it with the 1986 constitution. On March 25, 1986, President Aquino issued Proclamation No. 3 titled "Declaring a National Policy to Implement Reforms Mandated by the People, Protecting Their Basic Rights, Adopting a Provisional Constitution, and Providing for an Orderly Transition." The constitution, later known as the "Freedom Constitution," was proclaimed, setting aside the 1973 Constitution and recognizing the new Aquino administration as a temporary revolutionary government until the framing of the new Constitution. It virtually accepted parts of the 1973 Constitution's provisions, particularly the Bill of Rights.

- Sir, why was the Freedom Constitution formed?
- The goal was to reorganize the government and form a Constitutional Commission to draft a formal constitution for the Philippine government following the Marcos regime. Reynato Puno wrote the Freedom Constitution, which was signed into law by President Corazon Aquino. In a televised statement to the country, President Corazon Aquino, clad in her characteristic yellow, and Vice President Salvador "Doy" Laurel disbanded the national legislature and signed the interim constitution.
- It announced itself to be a revolutionary government. During the transition phase from the Marcos administration,this constitution provides as an assurance to Filipinos regarding the restoration of democracy. The President continued to wield legislative powers under the Freedom Constitution until a legislature formed under a new constitution. Furthermore, the President was given the authority to appoint members of a Constitutional Commission tasked with drafting a new charter "truly reflective of the ideals and aspirations of the Filipino people." The Freedom Constitution went into effect on March 25, 1986, until the government was reorganized.

- A committee headed by Felipe Calderon and aided by Cayetano Arellano, the constitution was drafted, for the first time by representatives of the Filipino people and it is the first republican constitution in Asia. The constitution was inspired by the constitutions of Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Brazil, Belgium and France. After some minor revisions (mainly due to the objections of Apolinario Mabini), the final draft of the constitution was presented to Aguinaldo. This paved the way to launching the first Philippine Republic. It established a democratic, republication government with three branches - the Executive, Legislative and the Judicial branches. It called for the separation of church and state. The executive powers were to be exercise by the president of the republic with the help of his cabinet. Judicial powers were given to the Supreme Court and other lower courts to be created by law. The Chief justice of the Supreme Court was to be elected by the legislature with the concurrence of the President and his Cabinet.
- The Republic, on the other hand, was a short-lived government. Its collapse began with the outbreak of the Philippine-American War in February 1899 and ended with President Aguinaldo's arrest at Palanan, Isabela in March 1901. By that time, the Americans had firmly established themselves as the Philippines' new conquerors, with a military government ruling the country. The first civil administration in the islands was formally constituted in July 1901.
- The constitution notably included protections against abuses and specified national and individual rights not just of Filipinos and immigrants.
