  • Life in the Cretaceous period before the extinction...
  • During the Cretaceous period, Dinosaurs were the dominant land animals, with several species all over the continents. They lived in warm temperatures with lots of biodiversity. Until their extinction, that many believe was caused by an asteroid impact
  • The huge impact the asteroid did on Earth caused immense amounts of damage. The asteroid caused high amounts of nuclear energy to be released. Thermal radiation quickly spread burning everything in its surroundings, causing a rise in temperatures. A huge earthquake around the magnitude of 11 also occurred that caused tsunamis and flooding.
  • Evidences have been found that support this theory of extinction:-Dinosaur fossils are only found below the K/T boundary-Physically altered mineral quartz due to high shock pressures-Sedimentary clay layer found with excess amounts of iridium which is common in meteorites -Soot was also found in this layer indicating massive fires cause by a huge impact-The Chicxulub crater: This impact would cause enormous tidal waves, and evidence of just such waves at about that time has been found all around the Gulf.
  • The Dinosaur extinction allowed for new biodiversity of several species and plants. Humans also became the dominant land species. Some organisms were able to survive this asteroid impact by hiding/living in caves.
