  • I Am Every Good Thing is a book that encourages readers to celebrate everything that makes them the person they are.Written as a poem in the first person, I AM EVERY GOOD THING is a series of affirmations covering a range of human experiences like facing setbacks, enjoying triumphs, and being part of a family and community.
  • “I am not what they might call me.”
  • This may be a story for black boys to gravitate to, but lessons can be learned here no matter the race or sex.
  • Arise!!! You Are Worthy!!!
  • This book encourages kids that they can be a leader, an explorer, the life of the party, and an undisputed champion. They also learn it’s okay to make mistakes, to get back up when they fall down, and to be a shoulder to cry on when needed.
  • In Closing
  • With this forceful statement, he provides a tool for building Black resilience, reassuring young Black readers that they are not those names. James supplies his customarily painterly art, his brushy oils painting Black boys of every shade of brown playing, celebrating, achieving, aspiring, and loving.
  • The narrator speaks positivitythroughout this engaging book/poem. He reminds readers that no matter who you are you matter. As the narratorputs it, ""I am every good thing that makes the world go round. You know--like gravity, or the glow of moonbeams over a field of brand-new snow. I am good to the core, like the center of a cinnamon roll. Yeah, that good."
  • As we have read, the narrator isproud of everything that makes him who he is. He's got big plans, and no doubt he'll see them through--as he's creative, adventurous, smart, funny, and a good friend. Sometimes he falls, but he always gets back up. And other times he's afraid, because he's so often misunderstood and called what he is not. So slow down and really look and listen, when somebody tells you--and shows you--who they are. There are superheroes in our midst!
