Storyboard Text

  • In October of 1066, after successfully invading England, William bought Edgar Atheling to his knees and forced him to surrender both his throne and his crown.
  • How dare thy steal my crown and throne!
  • At his coronation on the 25th of December, 1066 in Westminster, Abbey, William was crowned King of England.
  • In early 1067, William elected new rules across England, such as the distribution of land and The Feudal System. He ensured that no one man was given too great of an area in any region, and taught the English citizens that all land belonged to the crown. One quarter of England was treated by William as personal property and the remaining 75% of the country was leased out under strict conditions.
  • After returning to Normandy in late 1066, William's wife, Matilda, was crowned Queen at Winchester Cathedral soon after on the 11th of May 1067.
  • Many years later, in 1072, William enforced the forest law, as he loved hunting. He declared that the animals and other wildlife that lived in certain areas of England's woodland were from then on property of the King.
  • Because England was now relatively secure, William spent much of this time in Normandy defending it from increasingly hostile neighbours. The main threats to Normandy were King Philip of France and Count Fulk le Rectin of Anjou
