- King & Queen – lavished money on himself and his palaces, his wife a incredible amount of money on dresses and fashion Paying for wars – A government spending more money than it takes in from tax revenues Deficit Spending –Huge debts lead to increased taxes of the Third Estate (first & second estate refuse to pay taxes)

- Angry members of the Third Estate storm the Bastille (which King Louis XVI used to imprison any one he chose) July 14, 1789, This becomes France’s Independence DayIn August, National Assembly issues the Declaration on the Rights of ManLouis XVI did not actually want a written constitution When news of his plan to use military force against the National Assembly reached Paris on July 14, 1789, people stormed the Bastille
- The Reign of Terror ends on July 28, 1794 andthe Convention was finally able to inaugurate itsnew constitution. The new Constitution of the Republic createsanother new government called The Directory
