  • The Whiskey Rebellion was a tax revolt in the United States that lasted from 1791 to 1794.
  • We have the right to tax you colonists on anything we deem necessary, and you have no say in the matter.
  • The tax collection was about to face violent opposition.
  • This is ridiculous.
  • Alexander Hamilton advocated for the federal government to assume responsibility for the debt. To avoid further financial difficulties, he also proposed a whiskey excise levy.
  • Pennsylvania farmers were openly in rebellion against the whiskey tax, massacring tax collectors, closing country courts, and demanding the repeal of the feared excise.
  • George Washington believed that the federal government needed to remain strong enough to prevent state or regional interests from gaining too much power.
  • At this point, President Washington rode toward the border with a militia army of 13,000 men. When confronted with this force, the rebellion crumbled.
