  • I only have one dollar and eighty-seven cents. I can't afford to buy Jim a present.

  • The most valuable thing I have is my hair. I'll sell it to make money and buy Jim a present.

  • Della was sad because she only had one dollar and eighty-seven cents. It was impossible to buy Jim a gift with that kind of money. 
  • CLIMAX
  • Don't look at me that way, I sold my hair to buy you a present. She will grow back. My hair grows very fast.
  • She stood by the window and stared blankly at a gray cat walking along a gray fence in a gray backyard. The expenses had been greater than she had thought. She was thinking that to give Jim she wanted something fine, rare and excellent as Jim was.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • I sold my watch to buy the combs, but you cut your hair and you won't be able to use it.
  • I sold my hair to buy your watch chain, but you sold it and you can't wear it.
  • Della went to sell her hair and the woman bought it for her and gave her $20 dollars, with this Della could buy her a gift for Jim.
  • RESOLUTION
  • You will still be beautiful.
  • Della waited for Jim to arrive. When Jim arrived he was shocked and Della was afraid that everything was going to change between her and Jim.
  • Jim hands Della the gift and Della hands Jim the gift. But to his surprise the gifts were useless.
  • They realize that the gifts do not matter, what matters is the love between them.
