- Hi Sam ! I have a science project on conservation of plants and animals. Can you give me some idea about it?
- Yeah sure , you can say about the conservation of biodiversity-Protection of biodiversity is the need of the hour. The government of India has taken several steps to protect flora and fauna. Several protected areas, such as biosphere reserves, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries are built to safeguard the original habitats and the wildlife.
- Oh Okay, What are biosphere reserves?
- It is a large area which aims to conserve not only the biodiversity but also other resources and traditional life of the tribal living in that area. It was initiated by UNESCO in 1971.A biosphere reserve is divided into 3 interlinked zones - core zone , buffer zone and transition zone.
- Can you explain me what are the interlinked zones of biosphere reserves?
- Core zone: It is the innermost zone that comprises of a strictly protected area where no human activity is allowed.Buffer zone: It is the middle zone that surrounds the core and is used for activities relating to scientific research, training and education.Transition zone: It is the outermost zone surrounding the buffer zone and it is used for non-destructive human activities including agriculture, housing for tribal people and tourism.
