- Hello! My name is Henry and I'm here to tell the story of reconstruction after the Civil War.
- This is were slaves often worked, slavery actually played a big part in the civil war. However, during the reconstruction era post civil war, the thirteenth amendment banned all slavery or any harsh treatment, except for punishment of committed crimes from the United States.
- Yes! We're free!
- They claim we're free, yet we still have no rights!!
- Yeah! What about the Jim Crow Laws that separate blacks and whites, or black codes that prevent us free slaves from having normal rights as citizens. Do people even consider us citizens?
- Well, thanks to the 14th amendment, All people born in the U.S. living under the country's rules, are citizens of the country and state they live in! No state can create a law that strips away any rights from a person!
- YES!!
- This isn't fair! We're citizens yet we still can't vote!!
- Now all freedmen can vote thanks to the 15th amendment, which states that a citizens right to vote cannot be taken away because of their race, color, or previous servitudes! (slavery)
- Yes! We finally have right just like all the other citizens!
