  • The virus triggers Emma's body's second line of defence, the mast cells in her sinuses swell to prevent further spread of the virus, her under-eyes become a bit red, due to the swellings. The virus enters her blood.
  • the virus, also known as pathogens, have a certain shape on then which is called the antigen, this triggers the immune system to defend the body. White blood cells produce antibodies with the matching shape to bind themselves to the pathogens. the binding either neutralises the pathogen, marks it for the destruction, or activates other immune systems from the body to destroy the pathogens.
  • Inside the Blood
  • anti-bodies produced by white blood cells
  • Emma recovered from her cold, and her body has now gained active immunity against the flu virus, due to her body producing memory cells which remember the virus, and cause the body to react more effectively and faster incase Emma is exposed to the virus again in the future. Emma could have also vaccinated herself against the flu beforehand, this would have triggered the same response (active immunity ).
