  • We want to take control of Sicily!
  • This is great!
  • Rome wanted to take ownership of Sicily before the Punic Wars. It was quickly growing into a strong soon-to-be republic.
  • Carthage had ownership of Sicily. Carthage was part of a large and wealthy empire called the Phoenician Empire across the Mediterranean Sea.
  • The first Punic War was fought navally. Rome was stronger on land and Carthage was stronger on water. Rome wins because they attack Carthaginian ships with grappling hooks and gangplanks to climb onto their ships.
  • A famous leader from Carthage named Hannibal Barca led elephants around the Alps where they could camp out. Tired of waiting, Hannibal took a portion of his troops and attacked Rome directly. Although winning some battles along the way, Rome still wins the second Punic War.
  • Carthage fought the third Punic War while it was very weak. Cato the Great helped burn the city, salt the fields, and sell the survivors as slaves.
  • The Punic War had a lasting affect on Ancient Rome. Rome gained new territories in Spain, Africa, and Sicily. Farmlands were destroyed.
