Storyboard Text

  • Thanks so much for coming in today, Mrs. Jones.
  • Of course, Mr. Adams. You sounded worried on the phone. What's going on?
  • It's about your son, Tom. As you know, Tom has always been a very good student, participating in class and trying hard. However, on the MAP exam, I'm afraid he scored far below average. Also, since the exam, he seems very unmotivated in class. I wanted to let you know in person and see what might be going on and what we can do to help him.
  • I'm a bit surprised, but there's been a lot going on at home lately. I wonder if that has something to do with this.
  • It’s probably related to this big change in his life. I went through the same thing when I was his age, actually.
  • Now that you mention it, he has seemed a bit withdrawn at home. I thought it was just a phase.
  • Oh?
  • Ah, I see. That can be a very traumatic experience for a child. How has he been at home?
  • Oh, really? I had no idea. What should we do?
  • Well, I recently got remarried and Tom and I moved in with my new husband and his children.
  • We really need to take care of Tom socially and emotionally. He knows you love him, of course, but he needs to hear it and feel it much more now than ever. Ask him about school each day, show lots of interest, and, make sure he feels safe in his new home.
  • You also should set rules at home (just like in school). These should be positive. For example, a reward for doing well.
  • That sounds great. What about in the classroom? How can you help him when he’s here?
  • That’s great advice. I can do all those things.
  • I’m glad you asked. I’ll be sure to show empathy and set positive rules just like you will at home. I’ll be mindful about where he needs academic help. I’ll work one-on-one with him during my morning meeting time to help him catch up. I’ll check on his progress regularly through formative assessments. I’d also like to give him more opportunities to participate and be a leader to help increase his confidence.
