Sang Nila Utama was a prince from Sumatra. He sailed to the island of Benten to look for a suitable place to set up a new city. He stayed in Bentan for a period of time.

While walking around the island with his men,he saw an animal. It had a red body black head and white chest.It looked swift and strong.Sang nila utama and his men had not seen such an animal before. One of his men said it looked like a singa or lion.

Sang nila utama thought the lion was a sign that the island was a good place to set up a city. He named the island Singapura, Lion city. Sang nila utama became singapura's first king.

Lord hastings gave his approval for sir stamford raffles to look for a suitable location at the southern end of the straits of malaka to look for a place to set up a british trading port. He wanted to look for a place that was not already controlled by the dutch.
