  • The Kaiser felt he needed a bigger navy than Britain to protect its country. While Britain and Germany built up their navies, the major powers on mainland Europe were also building up their armies. This then led to The Naval war because the two countries competed to have the best Navy (Militarism).

  • Archduke Francis Ferdinand & his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg by a 19-year old Serbian named Gavrilo Princip. The suspect shot to shots that killed both of them, minutes after an assassination attempt on Archduke. Nationalism led to the assassination of Archduke because many oppressed Slavic groups in the Austro-Hungarian Empire wanted to form independent nation states.(Assination & Nationalism)

  • During the years of 1885-1914, the European power (Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, and Italy) invaded Africa and established colonies there because they were seeking large territories to increase their access to resources and people.   • The Germans attacked the Lusitania because it carried about 173 tons of war munitions for Britain, which the Germans thought was a further justification for the attack. This caused the Germans to sink The Lusitania, which led to the killing of 128 Americans. (Sinking of Lusitania)
  • January 1917
  • British cryptographers decoded a telegram from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to Heinrich von Eckhardt, the German Minister to Mexico, offering Mexico territory in exchange for supporting the German cause. The Telegram was proposing a military alliance between Germany & Mexico. (Telegram & Alliances)
  • April 2, 1917
  • On this day Woodrow Wilson delivered his Speech to Congress, which reassured Congress about his motivation to join the war which is to make the world safe for democracy.
