  • We want change!!
  • I am Toussaint L'Overture
  • Toussaint was born into slavery in Saint Domingue. He believed that he was more than a slave and he learned to read and write every book he could get his hands on.
  • We want him!
  • No we do.
  • Toussaint wanted the poor treatment and wanted to feel like he was more than just a slave. The other slaves felt this way too and they all wanted a change.
  • Toussaint joined the slave rebellion as just a general and ended up becoming a leader in 1798. His name soon became Toussaint L'overture (the one who finds an opening). He fought the French, Spanish, and British.
  • Time to go to the dudgeon.
  • Toussaint agreed to help the French army eject the British and Spanish when there was a jubilation among the blacks in Haiti. He proved to be a brilliant general by winning 7 battles in 7 days and became a de facto governor of the colony.
  • Napoleon and Toussaint agreed to terms of peace. Napoleon agreed to recognize Haitian independence and Toussaint agreed to retire from public life.
  • The French invited Toussaint to a negotiating meeting and when he arrived, by Napoleons orders, the French arrested him and betrayed safe conduct, putting him on a ship headed for France. Napoleon wanted him to be put in a dungeon in the mountains, and murdered by the means of cold, starvation, and neglect. Others carried on the fight for freedom while he died in prison.
