  • Stage 3- The Ailing Montag
  • You need to come back Montag. We need you, but you can take as much time off that you needs.
  • Montag was introduced as a hardworking man that loves his job. Montag was a firefighter, who destroys books and illegal art for a living. He is described as the "average Joe". Montag was considered a Happy person, with a loving wife, and the ideal life. "Montag grinned the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame. He knew that when he returned to the firehouse, he might wink at himself, a minstrel man, burnt-corked, in the mirror. Later, going to sleep, he would feel the fiery smile still gripped by his face muscles, in the dark. It never went away, that smile, it never ever went away, as long as he remembered."
  • Stage 4- The Quest for Knowledge
  • I want to understand why the lady ended her life for books.
  • Montag meets Clarisse, a "weird" girl who was seen as an outcast and Different, on the street late and night. She is walking home and Montag decides to walk her home to make sure she gets home safe. Clarisse begins to make conversation and ask odd questions and tells interesting stories. These questions begin to make Montag question a lot of things around him. “Have you ever watched the jet cars .racing on the boulevards down that way?” “I rarely watch the ‘parlor walls’ or go to races or Fun Parks. So I’ve lots of time for crazy thoughts, I guess." The most important question which greatly effected Montag was "Are you Happy?" This question would result in Montag beginning to question his entire life, resulting in him becoming ill.
  • Stage 5- The Inquisitive Montag Rebels
  • Montag responds to a call at work for a older lady that is hoarding books in her home. After Montag and Capt. Beatty begin to burn the lady's books, Montag decided to take a book home. He does this because the old lady stayed in the home and burned to death with her books. Saying to Montag "I want to stay here.” This would scar Montag and make him not ever want to return to work again. He would become extremely emotionally ill. Capt. Beatty went to check on Montag to tell him that it is normal what he is feeling. “It’s not just the woman that died,” said Montag. “Last night I thought about all that kerosene I’ve used in the past ten years. And I thought about books." "Beatty puffed his pipe. “Every fireman, sooner or later, hits this. They only need understanding, to know how the wheels run. Need to know the history of our profession."
  • Stage 6- Attainment of Knowledge
  • After Montag had began to explore the world of books he needed a guide and someone that could help him learn. He wanted to further his knowledge on books, philosophy, and art. So Montag seeks out Faber, and old ex-professor from a time where intellectuals where the leaders of the country. Proff. Faber would begin to be Montag's "mentor" when it comes to books and how Montag could help advocate and save old books that he owned. Faber gives Montag a set of modified sea shells that allow them to communicate at all times.
  • Montag returns to work after a long hiatus and brings a book with him. He brings the book to burn in front of his coworkers and Capt. Beatty. Then the firehouse alarm goes off and Montag suits up for the firs time in a long time. The firemen reach the house and it is Montag's House. Mildred had called Capt. Beatty and told him about his books. Capt. Beatty Begins to announce the fact that Montag should have joined back and not explored the non-sense of literature. Capt. Beatty Forces Montag to burn down his own house and all of the books he found, Montag's moded seashells where spotted by Beatty and he took them. Faber tells Montag about the intellectuals that live on the train tracks. Montag decides he will try to join them and meet them across the river. Before Montag leaves he realizes that he is leading the hound to Faber, so he constructs a plan to mask his stench and to save Faber. He uses dirty clothes and alcohol to mask his smell and directs Faber to clean his house and rid of his stench. Montag leaves Faber's house and crosses the river. After making a fire Montag ponders over fire helping and not destroying, The Intellectuals find him and explain their plan to remember books, they ask him if he wants to join and he does, Montag finally feels like he has found his purpose and is happy with the situation he is in.
