  • When it begins
  • The French Revolution was caused because of social inequalities. In France, there used to be something called the Old Order. This separated everyone into three classes- the first estate, which was made up of the Roman Catholic Clergy, the second estate, which had the nobility, and the third estate, which included everyone else- the peasants, the workers, the merchants, etc. This imbalance of power led to great unhappiness and riots in the third estate.
  • Storming Bastille
  • Financial crisis also had a huge effect on the beginning of the French Revolution. France was in a lot of debt because of borrowing money to spend on wars and the king's lavish lifestyle. Rather unsuccessfully, the king tried to make the 1st and 2nd estates start paying taxes, but when they didn't want to he backed off, which just led to more debt. Nature also caused economic issues because of harsh weather that affected everyday
  • Great Fear
  • THEY ARE GOING TO KILL US ALL!! (everyone)
  • King Louis XVI finally agreed to have the Estate General meet. It was the first time in 175 years that it had done so. Previously, each estate had only gotten one vote, but the 3rd estate wanted to change that. King Louis XVI kicked the 3rd estate out, but they stayed in a tennis court until they wrote a constitution for France
  • Updated rights
  • The Bastille was a french prison, a symbol of France's dictatorial monarchy. While there were only 7 prisoners, the people were not there for them. They demanded that the prison governor give them the large stash of ammunition held in the Bastille, and when he refused a battle broke out. Eventually they killed him and carried his head around on a stick. While the Tennis Court Oath was important, this is considered when the revolution technically began.
  • When rumors started to spread that King Louis XVI had hired people to punish the 3rd estate for their attack on Bastille, panic started spreading like a wildfire. Peasants acted on their wish for revenge against abusive landowners by destroying feudal-fee records and burning nobles' houses. While there was violence, it didn't come from soldiers. It in fact came from people tired of decades of mistreatment.
  • In August of 1789, the National Assembly in France had got rid of all the feudal fees that the peasants owed. The 1st estate's privileges were also eliminated. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen had the essential ideals of the French Revolution- liberty, equality, and fraternity. Much like the US Bill of Rights, it granted freedom of speech, the press, and religion... at least for men.
