Storyboard Text

  • Fort Sumter(April 12-14, 1861)
  • We, the Confederates, have captured Fort Sumter!
  • Battle of Bull Run(July 21, 1861)
  • We have overpowered the Union!!
  • Retreat!!
  • Battle of Shiloh(April 6-7, 1862)
  • Our goal of taking over the Mississippi River is now completed.
  • (Second Day of the battle)
  • This battle was the first bloodless battle that led to the start of the Civil War. The Confederate general had ordered to evacuate the fort, refused, and then attacked in response. Eventually the Confederacy captured the fort.
  • Battle of Antietam(September 17, 1862)
  • This battle was the first major battle which showed both sides two things. The battle would be long and bloody, and the soldiers needed training. The Union was doing well at first, but the Confederates ended up defeating them.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg(December 11-15, 1862)
  • Bombard them with attacks!!
  • The Battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest battle in the Civil War. Union general, Ulysses S. Grant, captured Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. These forts guarded 2 important tributaries of the Mississippi River. Grant didn't succeed on the first day, but went back and won.
  • Battle of Gettysburg(July 1-3, 1863)
  • There was no clear winner in this battle. Though the Union claimed victory as Lee did tell his forces to withdraw. The Northern morale increased after this battle, but President Lincoln was disappointed that McClellan didn't go after the Confederates to ensure a Union victory.

  • So who exactly won?
  • This was the Union's worst defeat. Lee's forces used their knowledge of the land to their advantage. They fought from a crest in a hill. General Burnside's troops were had a lot of difficulty overpowering the bombarding attacks.
  • This was the turning point in the war after which the Union started to have many more victories. Lee had high hopes of invading the North again. The North defended very well against the invasions. The Gettysburg Address was a result of this battle.
  • Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure.
