  • CAPITALISM AND COMMUNISM DO NOT GO HAND IN HAND>!!
  • You think if we nod he'd let us go?
  • hmm... what's he on about...
  • Aren't you all sick and tired of babying the Soviets? Hmm? What would you all think about something called The Policy Of Containment.
  • The Soviets, lead by Stalin, were going around installing communists governments in countries such as Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Poland. These countries later known as Satellite Nations, were nations dominated by the Soviet Union.
  • Europe
  • In early 1946, Stalin gave a speech that communism and capitalism were incompatible and that war was in evident.
  • Faced with the threat that the Soviet Union proposed, Truman (the President of the U.S. at that time) decided to stop "babying the Soviets" and thus proposed a policy of containment.
  • Churchill said WHAT???
  • Europe was now divided into two political regions. One was a mostly democratic Western Europe and a communist Eastern Europe (but that's whole other topic to get into).
  • Then on march of 1946, Winston Churchill traveled to the United States and gave a speech describing the situation in Europe. The speech stated "an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. . . . All these famous cities and the populations around them lie in . . . the Soviet sphere, and all are subject in one form or another.."
  • When Stalin heard about Churchill's speech, he declared that Churchill's words were a "call to war". And that is how the phrase "iron wall" then came to stand for the political division of Europe. "The Iron Wall"1945-1991
