  • Basilio landed in San Diego in the evening, just as the Christmas Eve (noche buena) parade began. He was delayed on his journey because the cochero or rig driver (the person who drives the karitela or horse-drawn carriage) had forgotten his cedula (Residence Certificate).
  • Do you have a watch chain?
  • During the procession, the picture of Methusalem (Methuselah, the world's oldest person) was paraded, followed by the three magi (wise men). The cochero inquired of Basilio if Bernardo Carpio had been able to extricate his second leg from the San Mateo Mountains (nope, not in California). Sad-faced children carrying torches trailed the parade. San Jose was next, followed by children holding "parol," or Christmas lamps. The Blessed Virgin Mary was at the end of the procession.
  • I want a pair of earrings!
  • The parade came to an end, and the guardia civil saw that the cochero's carriage had no light. Sinong was beaten up by the guards once more.Basilio made the decision to simply walk.
  • WHY?!
  • Only the house of Capitan Basilio seemed to be alive among the houses Basilio passed. Basilio noticed the Capitan conversing with the parish priest, the alferes, and Simoun.
  • Simoun and Capitan Basilio agreed to go to Tiani to check Simoun's jewelry. Basilio found Simoun unbearable because Simoun was able to do business in the Philippines unlike other people.
  • Basilio is well-liked in Capitan Tiago's household, especially by the older household servants, who witnessed Basilio conduct surgery with extreme calm. The old man attempted to inform Basilio of some recent events: an elderly forest ranger had died of old age, and the parish priest refused to give him a poor man's burial. Basilio was disappointed to learn that someone had died of old age; he had hoped to do autopsy on those who had died of disease.
