Storyboard Text

  • Only one dollar and eighty seven cents. That’s all I have. Tomorrow is Christmas and I need to get a present for Mr. James Dillingham Young, my husband who receives $20 a week for being a professor. I want to get something nice for him, but I am very limited. There are two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which Jim and I take mighty pride in. The first is Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The second is my hair.
  • Look! A sign reading “Mme. Sofronie. Hair Goods of all kinds.
  • Give it to me quick
  • Will you buy my hair?
  • Della holds out, eagerly, Jim’s beautiful present.
  • I buy hair. Take yer hat off and let’s have a sight at the looks of it. ……. Twenty dollars.
  •
  • If Jim doesn’t kill me, before he takes a second look at me, he’ll say I look like Coney Island chorus girl. But what could I do — oh! What could I do with a dollar and eighty-seven cents? I bought Jim a platinum fob chain simple and chaste in design, and it’s even worthy of the watch. They took 21 dollars from me for it, leaving the store with 87 cents.
  • The combs! My hair grows so fast Jim! Oh, oh!
  • Cut it off and sold it. Don’t you like me just as well, anyhow? I’m me without my hair, ain’t I?
  • If you’ll unwrap the package you you may see why you had me going a while at first.
  • You cut off your hair?
  • Isn’t it dandy Jim? I hunted all over town to find it. You’ll have to look at the time a hundred times a day now. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it.
  • I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs.
