Present Day (Who is the migrant and what is their relationship to you?
Hi Emma!
Hi Mom (Kara Dendrinos)!
30 years earlier(The decision to migrate)
Hmm.. I love my small hometown in Minnesota on the lake, but I I just got a really good job offer and I want to explore a different part of the world and find more economic opportunities.. Illinois!
Still 30 years earlier (The journey)
Wow! Moving is hard and expensive, but it will be worth it in the end. Although I am facing some problems, (having to spend a lot of money, not knowing the area very well) the actual migrating part has been easy which is driving 9 hours in my car from MN to IL.
Still 30 years earlier (Settling in a new area)
The first thing I'm going to do in my new home is decorate it! This is different for me since my old home was the college dorms that I shared with 3 other girls and this apartment is much larger than my space in the dorm. Good thing everyone in my new complex is so friendly and eager to help me settle in. Good think I didn't have to experience any type of assimilation (other than being in a larger suburban area) since my migration would be described at intraregional internal migration!
Present Time (Today)
Yes Emma, I am very glad I migrated. Though I didn't help others migrate because all of my family stayed in MN and I was the only one who migrated out of state. I miss my family and being so close to them the most. I would never want to perform countermigration but I do visit a lot to see my family.
So are you glad you migrated? Did you help others migrate? What do you miss the most? Would you ever want to go back?
And that's the end of my mom's migration story from a rural area in Minnesota to a more suburban area in Illinois. No regrets on migrating and she's happy to have migrated.
