  • Displacement
  • Why did you do that!
  • Regression is when someone imitates actions from the psychosexual stage in which they are fixated. When given bad news, for instance, a person who was preoccupied at an earlier developmental stage could cry or pout.
  • Rationalization
  • Everyone probably failed the test.
  • Denial is a protective strategy described by Anna Freud that involves rejecting reality and obstructing awareness of external events.
  • Sublimation
  • When someone transfers their emotional weight or emotional response from one entity to another, it is known as displacement. Someone who has a difficult day at work and then snaps at their family at home can have this protective mechanism.
  • You need to study more.
  • When someone unconsciously tries to avoid addressing the fundamental causes of a behavior, rationalization is a protective strategy. People who rationalize a situation may be able to keep their self-respect or avoid feeling guilty about something they have done wrong.
  • Sublimation is typically regarded as a mature and healthy method of controlling urges that may be unwanted or unsatisfactory. Sublimation enables us to direct our energy toward positive things rather than acting out in ways that can hurt us or others.
  • This is helping me get my mind off the test.
