  • What marked the Beginning of the Middle Ages? Rome fell in 476 ce because they could not defend their boarders from an invading by barbarians.
  • Once the barbarians invaded the Roman Empire, Europe was left with no order or protection.
  • Why did feudalism develop? Feudalism was developed to regain order and provide protection.
  • What was life like in the Early Middle Ages? Life was hard and the people continued to fear invaders.
  • Under the feudalism system people were bound together by faith, loyalty and the land.
  • Who was at the top of the feudal society? The King was at the top of the feudal society. The king could not control the land by himself so he granted it to Lords.
  • What were expected of the Monarchs/King/ Lords? They were expected to keep order and provide protection for their vassals.
  • How did the Monarchy become quite strong? In the beginning it was power conquest and inheritance, but later their power came from the courts and bureaucratic structures.
  • Where did the Lords and Ladies live? The Lords and Ladies were nobility so they lived in manors, some lords had serval manors.
  • What were some of the typical rooms in the manor/castle? Rooms in the manor house included the great hall, bed chambers, solars, garden robes, kitchen, panty and chapel.
  • What was the stong code in which the knights lived by? The knights lived by the code of chivalry social codes.
  • What were some of the jobs/responsibilities of the knights? The knights served their lord according to the code, serve as soldier when needed, and supervise the peasants and land.
  • How did the peasants support the feudal system? The peasants supported the feudal system by working the land for their lords.
  • What were some of the jobs peasants performed? Most of the peasants worked the land for their Lords. Some peasants were considered free an d could own their own business like carpentry, bakers, and blacksmiths.
  • The Feudal System/life style made Europe safer, produced more food and goods, and developed new technology to make daily tasks eaiser.
