At Anandpur in the Punjab, Sikhs have come to celebrate Baisakhi (harvest festival). Guru Gobind Rai (the Sikh leader) asked people to try to come. He stood in front of a tent and waved his sword.
He then asked Who among you will die for God, for your Guru. Who will give their head to my sword? A young man approached the tent.
The Guru took him in, then emerged alone, showing everybody his bloody sword.
This happened four more times. Five men had now disappeared into the tent and not come out.
Then, the Guru appealed for calm, and all five men walked out, in saffron robes.
The Guru then announced that these men would be the first five members of the Khalsa and that all members must be pure and truly committed to the Guru. All men in the Khalsa must take the surname Singh. And so Guru Gobind Rai became Guru Gobind Singh and the Khalsa was formed.
