- Hello everyone, today I will be taking you all around my farm and show you how my farm works and why I have chosen this type of Commercial agriculture.
- But first what is Commercial Agriculture? It is the production of crops for selling and profit purposes. The type of commercial agriculture that my farm is based on is Orchard farming.
- Orchard farming usually deals with the production of seasonal fruits and nuts with rows of trees. My farm is situated in Washington, USA where the lands are perfect for the production of these produce.
- The factors that I needed to consider before orchard farming was the location, climatic conditions, market demand, quality of soil, irrigation facilities, high labor requirements, etc. Taking care and adequately maintaining the farm is difficult but I love that I get the opportunity to sell my freshly picked fruits to customers in the local market near the farm.
- The entire process starts by: - 1) Preparing the soil - tilling & leveling it.2) Sowing - planting the baby plant in the soil.3) Adding manure and fertilizers - usually organic matter as it provides the required minerals and nutrients for the plant's growth.4) Irrigation - providing water to the plants.We repeat the last 2 steps for a couple of years, once the tree starts bearing fruit our employees freshly handpick the fruits and hygienically pack them which then is sent to the farmers market.
- Once the fresh fruits and nuts are picked from my farm they arrive at the local farmers market. Customers get a wider variety from trusted local farmers like me that in turn support our cause for a safer and cleaner planet. I hope this tour around my farm was interesting and maybe it has also given an insight into an orchard farmer's life.
