  • The British imposed taxes on many goods and items such as mollases and harshly punished smugglers. In addition to this, colonists and colonial merchants were forced to smuggle goods because of the high taxes. This was called the sugar act passed by Parliament in 1764.
  • Declaratory Act
  • All of this land, power, andmoney is ours!
  • Just one year after the sugar act, the Quartering act was passed by parliament. This act required the colonist to house and provide supplies and food to the soldiers being held there. Again, the colonist protested that this was a violation of their rights and were angered.
  • Townshead Act
  • Stop U are not allowed to import goods without being taxed!
  • The stamp act waspassed by parliamentin early 1765. This act required that the colonist must be a special tax stamp for all kind of products and other things such as newspapers and licenses. Many parties protestedagainstthis such as Virginia's House of Burgesses declared that they alone could tax the people of Virginia and Patrick henry who gave an emotional speechprotesting and attacking the law. Because of Virginia's House of Burgesses other colonial parties followed in their example and organized a boycott of certain Britishgoods. Eventually in Octobera petition was written and was successful in the end of both the sugar and stamp act.
  • Writs of Assistance
  • After the repeal of the Stamp act a new act call the Declaratory act was passed by parliament in 1766. The Declaratory act stated that Parliament had total control over the colonies. This act affected the colonists because it would let the stage for future laws that would lead the colonist into war with Britian.
  • British officials tried taxing the colonist in ways that wouldn't anger them leading to the Townhead act passed by parliament in 1767. Under this act parliament had total control over the colonies and did not tax products or activities inside the colonies but products brought into the colonies. This affected the colonists because of the Americancolonies weren't allowed to have representative in the British Parliamentwhich is why they felt they shouldn'tbe taxed or havelaws put on them without representation.
  • Because of the Townshend act a system was set in place to help enforce the new import duties and help customs officers find illegal goods. This allowed customs officers to use the Writs of Assitance which was a court order that allowed officials to search without saing their intentions. This angere the colonists because they felt it was a violation of their rights
