"We have had the current Receiver for a very long time, she went on."
"We failed in our last selection," the chief Elder said solemnly."
"Joans didn't know what she was referring to, but he could sense the discomfort of the audience."
"Intelligence"she said."
"Integrity," she said next."
"He felt fear flutter within him."
" Jonas", she said turning to him, but speaking in a voice that the entire community could hear, the training required of you involves pain. Physical pain."
Joans was filled with anxiety. The elder had made a mistake, he thought. But when the elder eventually called him to the stage, Jonas’s anxiety still hadn't left him. (pg. 74-75)
"Yes, you crused your finger in a door last year."
"Jonas nodded, agreegining, as he recalled the incidnent, and it's accompanying misery."
The elder then gave Jonas the life assignment of (Receiver of Memory). The elder said that " this selection is very rare." Jonas suddenly saw this old man look at him through The audience. (pg. 76-77)
“We are convinced that Jonas has the ability to acquire wisdom.”
"But we feel certain that you are brave," she said to him."
"For a moment he froze, consumed with despair."
The elder went on explaining that “Jonas had no dreams of uncertainty.” “That he has shown all the qualities of the Receiver.” The elder stated "intelligence, integrity, courage.” (pg. 78)
"I think it's true", he told the chief ELder and the community "I don't understand it yet."
The elder carried on saying “this job requires a lot of pain.” “Physical pain.” “That you have never experienced before.” “Pain of magnitude and the elder continued on that they can not prepare Jonas for that.” “But we know that Jonas is brave.” (pg. 78-79)
She then spoked "we are convinced that Jonas has the ability of wisdom.” “The Receiver must have one more quality, to have the (Capacity to See Beyond).” The elder stated that “Jonas had this quality already.” (pg. 79)
Jonas started thinking that he does not have that quality but then something happened and the audience had changed. Jonas explained that “he does believe it is true but does not understand it yet.” The crowd started to cheer “JONAS, JONAS, JONAS!” (pg. 80-81)
