Elie is being whipped for getting into a situation that he should have not seen. So he was punished by being whipped many times across the back. It shows that a man is attacking another man.
Man V Nature
"we were outside. The icy wind wipped my face. I was constantly biting my lips so that they wouldn't freeze."(Wiesel 89)
Elie is praying for the reason of seeing that Rabbi's son has abandoned him and he does not want to do that to his father. So he prayed and basically told himself to have the power to not abandon his own father.
Man V Society
"Well? What did we tell you? You wouldn't believe us. There they are, your Germans. What do you say now? Where is their famous cruelty."(Wiesel 10)
Elie doesn't understand why his fellow Jews are still trying to worship God. So he is questioning God and why he should still praise his name. From his understanding, of why God has been silent during this time of pain for them.
Elie is going through the snow with no shoes with the icy cold wind on his face. It is shown that nature is going against the people and how it is affecting Elie and the people.
Elie and the other Jews were being warned by Moishe the Beadle, but they didn't believe him one bit. So at the point when the Germans came, they told him where the evil and famous cruelty was. So they didn't believe him and carried on with their lives.
