Storyboard Text

  • Teacher, I'm still confused with some of the materials can you please explain some of it to me?
  • Sure! Please feel free to ask.
  • Well first, I'm still not sure what are the properties of magnets?
  • Oh, it's simple! well magnets have a total of 4 properties. Such as, magnetic materials, magnetic poles, north and south poles and law of magnetic poles.
  • Oh, now I know... But teacher, one of the assignments mentioned about magnetic materials being soft and hard and i don't know what it meant
  • Well about that... Magnetic materials such as iron that magnetize easily but readily lose their magnetism are said to be soft. Those such as steel that are harder to magnetize than iron but say magnetize are hard
  • Are there anymore questions?
  • oh, so that's what it meant... Well now that you've mentioned it I believe that magnets also have something called "magnetic field"
  • To be exact, a magnetic field is the region around a magnet where a magnetic force is exerted and is represented by lines of force whose direction at any point is the direction of the force on a N pole.
  • Wait teacher, so can magnetic fields be measured?
  • Of course! In fact, there is a method to map magnetic fields. It is called the "Iron Filling Method". To do it, first place a sheet of paper on top of a bar magnet and sprinkle iron filings thinly and evenly on to the paper from a ‘pepper pot’. Tap the paper gently with a pencil and the filings should form patterns showing the lines of force. Each filing turns in the direction of the field when the paper is tapped.
  • oh ok... I think i've understood most of it now. Thank you for your time teacher!
  • Of course, not a problem! Oh, i almost forgot don't forget that at a neutral point the field due to one magnet cancels that due to another. Good luck on your studying!
