- Lyra is helping Mrs. Coulter at her cocktail party. She overhears some of the guests talking about Dust and the Oblation Board.
- Lyra learns that Mrs. Coulter is one of the Gobblers, the child-snatchers who took her friend.
- And then there's the Gobblers...
- That's what I mean. That's what they call the Oblation Board, don't they?
- Adéle Starminster, a journalist who snuck into the party, tries to talk to Lyra about Mrs. Coulter, but Mrs. Coulter realizes what is happening and throws Adéle out of the party. She questions Lyra about what Adéle tried to ask her.
- Lord Boreal asks Lyra to come talk to him, and Lyra gets him to tell her about Dust and the Oblation Board. She realizes that Mrs. Coulter is taking the children.
- Lyra overhears some people talking about her uncle, Lord Asriel. She hears them say that he's being held in a fortress guarded by armored bears.
- No, I don't think Lord Asriel will be troubling us for quite some time.
- This is too much for Lyra. She packs some clothes and money, and she and her daimon leave the house and prepare to run away.
