  • How the French class worked.
  • How France became bankrupt
  • Meetings of the Estates-General
  • They had 3 estates, first, second and third. First and second estates had many privileges and benefits as well as not being forced to pay taxes even though they were rich. First estate was high ranking members of the church and second estate were nobles who passed titles down the family, third estate were the poorest of people who were forced to pay taxed and work hard for no privileges, as depicted above.
  • Tennis court oath & National Assembly
  • France's King and Queen at the time, King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, were reckless with their spending. After fighting 2 wars without much to show for it they were down a lot of money, the King spent absorbent amounts of money on his palaces and himself as for the Queen she spent much money on dresses and fashion for herself. To try to feed the greed of the rulers the third estate's taxes were raised, first and second estate refused to pay taxes.
  • Storming of the Bastille
  • May 5th, 1789. King Louis calls upon all the estates in a attempt to resolve the finical crisis. Each estate would get 1 vote, the first and second estate could try to block the third estate from having its way if they wanted, so the third estate demanded that voting was done by population, as they were by far the biggest estate in that aspect.
  • Guillotine
  • King Louis locks third estate out of the Meetings of the Estates-General. The third estates decided to meet on a nearby tennis court and decides to create the National assembly. They took the "Tennis Court Oath" vowing to establish a new constitution for France. If the third estate had not been locked out of the Meetings of the Estates-General this would have taken a different approach.
  • Louis XVI did not want a written constitution, he planned to use his military power to stop the National Assembly, when news of this reached Paris on July 14th, 1789, People invaded the Bastille. The livid members of the third estate stormed the Bastille which the King imprisoned anyone he wanted in. That day became France's Independence Day. In August, the National Assembly issues the Declaration on the Rights of Man.
  • The Guillotine was made as a attempted humane way of execution. Guillotines were used to execute both King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. The King was guillotined January 21, 1793 and the Queen was guillotined October 16, 1793 by a group known as The Convention with the thought that if royal blood was allowed to live they would yearn for absolute power like they once had.
